Different types of pallet racking: Which is best for your warehouse?

What is pallet racking?

Pallet racking is a type of warehouse storage system that holds goods on pallets in rows over multiple levels. Pallet racking is available in a variety of different formats to suit different warehouse operations, but all of them can significantly increase storage capacity by making use of vertical space.

The type of pallet storage that’s best for your warehouse depends on the materials you are storing, the size of your warehouse or space (floorspace and square footage) and how frequently you turn over stock. Getting this right could dramatically improve the efficiency and productivity of your warehouse and its staff. There are a huge range of pallet racking options to choose from – in this guide we’ll evaluate some of the most common types.

Adjustable or selective pallet racking

Also known as conventional pallet racking, this pallet storage system is the most popular and versatile on the market. Cost effective and easy to install and reconfigure, it consists of simple metal shelving designed to store pallets. Rack heights and widths can be tailored to your specific requirements. Adaptable and accessible, all stock is readily available using a forklift truck and the racking can be modified for use for any size load or forklift. However, floor space utilisation can be low in wide-aisle configuration and racking height is limited to the reach of the forklift trucks.

Narrow or very narrow aisle pallet racking

Very narrow aisle pallet racking is the modification of adjustable pallet racking for a very small area. Compacting the storage system usually involves narrowing the access aisles and can save up to 40% warehouse space. Special handling equipment will be required to fit down the slimmed-down aisles, often alongside a floor guidance system. This ultra-space-saving storage system remains a flexible solution thanks to the variable depth and height of the racking which can easily be modified according to your storage needs.

Push back racking

This type of racking utilises what’s known as a last in, first out (LIFO) storage method. It has a single loading and unloading area at the front; unit loads are stored by pushing the previous loads towards the back. The pallets are placed on trays that slide backwards and forwards along rails that are on a slight incline. Pallets are arranged in a line, and when one is removed, another behind slides into the front to replace its predecessor. Push back racking is ideal if you have limited space and need a high-density storage system.

Mobile pallet racking

Mobile pallet racking is another high-density storage solution, but this time the pallet racks are placed on mobile bases and guided through fixed tracks on the ground. Designed to optimise the storage capacity of your warehouse, the multiple access aisles of conventional racking systems are eliminated, with one single aisle remaining. This aisle is opened and closed by remote control via electric motors and moving parts fitted on the base. Mobile pallet racking is a good choice when the cost of floor space is high.

Drive in, drive through racking

These high-density pallet storage systems make the most of all available warehouse space and height. By enabling forklifts to drive directly into the bays, the need for aisles is removed entirely. They are easy to assemble and extremely low maintenance, making them a pleasingly economical storage option. Drive-in racking systems use one single entrance and exit at one end; drive through have entry points at either end. These are a great pallet storage option if you need to store identical products in volume.

Cantilever racking

If you require storage for long, bulky items such as piping, steel bars or tubing, then heavy duty cantilever racking rather than pallet racking could be the best option for you. Cantilever shelves are free-standing storage units with horizontal, load-bearing arms. They can accommodate materials of virtually any length and weight and are fully customisable, enabling easy access to your long dimensional goods.

How much does pallet racking cost?

Costs will vary, depending on the amount and height of pallet racking required. Costs to consider include the amount of floor space, the height of the building and the racking, required number of tiers, plus installation time. Smart storage solutions like pallet racking are always a worthwhile investment, helping you gain extra floorspace, improve productivity and encourage a smoother workflow.
